COVID-19 Update: Office Closing & IRS Extension Announcement

Updated as of March 17, 2020 at 4:45 p.m.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we continue to modify our business continuity plan to help safeguard our team and our clients. Effective Wednesday March 18th, we will be closing both our West Des Moines and Winterset offices to the public. The offices will remain closed to the public until further notice.

However, our team members will still be working to serve your accounting and tax needs during this time, mostly remotely, and will be available to connect with you by phone, email or video conference. We are still accepting client documents electronically or via mail, FedEx, UPS and fax. To help expedite the process and safeguard yourselves and our staff, we would prefer clients use the electronic option if possible. If you wish to provide your documents electronically via the secure transfer option, please e-mail Denise Hays at dhays@mhcscpa.com requesting additional details on the process. If you prefer to use fax, information can be faxed to the West Des Moines office at 515-280-1490 and the Winterset office at 515-462-1577.

The Treasury department also announced today that taxpayers can defer payments for 90 days past the April 15th deadline. The deferral is limited to $1 million of tax for individual taxpayers and $10 million of tax for corporate taxpayers. This announcement allows taxpayers to file their returns and pay later but also allows taxpayers to file extensions for their returns without making payments. Given the workplace disruption of COVID-19, we plan to file significantly more extensions for the 2019 tax year. We will continue to be diligent to meet your needs but our ability to complete your tax returns by the traditional April 15th deadline will be severely diminished. Your engagement team will reach out to you with additional information.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these unusual circumstances.
